Lumberton Mayor Kent Crider called a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the Army Corps of Engineers' environmental report.

The report stated there would be no significant environmental impact from the city's planned water and sewer improvements. Lumberton will use a $2.3 million grant from the Corps for the improvements. The city received the matching $600,000 in funds it needed in a Community Development Block Grant through the Mississippi Development Authority.

With the environmental report received, Lumberton can now proceed with the grant.

The first order of business was to advertise for bids for the water line extensions along Old Highway 11. This passed.

The city will enter into a contract with O'Neal-Bond Engineering for required civil services for the grant. ...

LAMAR COUNTY SUPERVISOR Warren Byrd said the armory is now a done deal, and the only thing remaining to be done is for the papers to be signed.

Lamar County will give Lumberton 5 acres in South Lamar Industrial Park and the Kids Kampus daycare center in exchange for the city's closed Mississippi Army National Guard armory.

Byrd said the first project he wishes to address at the armory is to add a senior citizens meal site. We will be looking forward to this. ...

THE LUMBERTON MUSEUM PROJECT needs gravel for the hole in the ground. I understand this will be available from Lamar County and ready to be disposed of by May 20. Football players will be helping to get it inside as a community project.

The Museum Committee wishes to thank the football players and the county.

People have been so helpful, working and helping in the cleanup and keeping the museum from folding up.
